Over the last decade or so, we have heard a constant dialogue centred around ‘saving the planet’… hinting that our world is in a state of collapse and about to expire, ruined of course, by the catastrophic actions of recent generations of human beings. Oh my! Over my lifetime the planet has been ruined by at least four different things. Electricity – The Atomic Bomb – the Ozone Layer and now of course – Climate Change??? Many people are going frantic at the thought of our climate changing, causing the seas to rise and the icebergs to melt, but I truly believe some scientists when they say that changes in the world’s weather patterns have been occurring over billions of years, and if any of us could come back in a few million years’ time I am sure you would hear those poor humans moaning about another climate change that was causing the seas to freeze. However, whether you choose to believe that the world is about to end or not is purely personal, being the forever optimist though, I like to believe that the planet will still be here for generations to come after me, so there is every good reason to keep our beautiful earth as lovely and as sustainable as possible for the children of the future. In this series of articles, I would like to encourage you to do as much as you can in order that our planet remains as beautiful as it is today. These writings were prompted by a recent advert on the television suggesting that all children should be encouraged to visit their nearest nature reserve or protected area so that they could enjoy the beauty of their country and spend a night under the stars… So staggeringly beautiful were the locations that were suggested for the children it boosted my optimism as to how wonderful our country is and how little has been done to ‘ruin’ it. But… there is still a need to make our children and grandchildren aware of the threats to the natural world because it’s their future that’s at stake not ours.
