‘Water, water everywhere – nor any drop to drink’ comes from ‘The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner’ which is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. A poem about the sea of course knowing for sure that we cannot drink sea-salted water. We can of course put a small amount of salt in a glass of water when we clean our teeth but it’s not wise to drink it. Water, fresh spring water is very precious, and it’s a well-known fact that we can go days without food but we cannot survive very long without water. I have heard it said that our bodies are made up of around 50-75% water so it goes without saying that we need it. We are very fortunate here in the UK as our water from the tap is perfectly safe to drink, unlike some countries where we are advised to buy bottled water. So, there is absolutely no need for you to spend your hard-earned money buying bottled water from the supermarket. It’s just a con! Because water is so precious, please make an effort to save as much of it as possible, and here are a few ways you can do just that… 1: Never leave a tap running unnecessarily. 2: If you have a leak get it fixed as soon as possible. 3: Take a quick shower as opposed to filling up a bath. 4: Invest in rain-buts, plants appreciate rain water as opposed to tap water. 5: Avoid using a sprinkler to water your garden – you can easily forget its running whereas, if you water with a hose or watering-can you will use a lot less. 6: Always wash a full load in your washing machine and dishwasher. And – Don’t forget to remind your children and grandchildren about the need to save our crystal-clear water because it’s their future that’s at stake not ours.
