Despite the information going around about people dying all over the world as a result of climate change, the fact is, the population of the world is larger than ever before with people living longer. Obviously, with the rise of world population there has to be more food made available and as people choose to eat meat, more and more farm animals are being raised for consumption. The problem is, raising and keeping farm animals use up a large amount of the world resources compared to raising plant food. Resources such as fossil fuels, billions of gallons of water and the thousands of trees that are being cut down to supply land for grazing and land for growing animal feed are being used at an alarming rate. We mustn’t forget the huge amounts of excrement and gasses produced by farm animals that is polluting the air we breathe affecting people with breathing difficulties. Animal waste also has a detrimental effect on nearby rivers and streams. So, what can we do to counteract the affect that farm animals have on our environment? Well, not a lot it seems unless we, on mass, demand less meat overall. Many years ago, people couldn’t afford to eat meat every day, unlike now, when it’s not unusual to hear of people consuming some form of meat or fish at every meal. Meat-free meals can be very tasty, healthy and less expensive so, if you want to save the planet why not try having a vegetarian meal from time to time. Don’t forget to try a veggie meal on your children or grandchildren now an again because they need to learn about the impact farm animals have on the planet as it’s their future that’s at stake not ours.
