Whoever, thought up the word ‘disgust’ must have been disgusted about something? It’s the perfect word for something that you find repulsive, for it’s a hard, gritty word, just perfect for how you might feel about something that you dislike intensely… So let us look at the emotion of disgust. What do you find disgusting? Is it something you see, hear, taste, or have to do? Up until my later years I always found the foul ‘F’ word disgusting, however, one hears it so often these days that rather than find it disgusting I tend to treat it with contempt, so long as I don’t hear is said in my presence or my home. Disgust is a natural emotion that is the perfect aid to our wellbeing. Just imagine opening a pack of meat, or fish and the obnoxious smell makes you grimace and turn your head in disgust. Would you eat it? No of course you wouldn’t, for the smelly item could make you sick and ill. If you are shopping and you see some vegetables, salads or fruits that are limp, squidgy or showing signs of mould would you buy it? No of course, not for such items could upset your stomach. Therefor your disgust has kept you well. If you meet someone who’s language, obscene remarks or actions make you cringe with contempt, while others may laugh and think they are fun, your disgust is telling you that the person in question is not for you – so again, your repulsion is turning you away from a friendship or relationship that is destined to fail. Touching things or handling items that repulses you is a warning to stay clear, and if that is impossible, your disgust is making sure you clean up well behind you especially your hands and clothes. So, there you are… The natural emotion of disgust is looking after your health and wellbeing and without such an emotion you probably would not last for many years.
