Reclaiming. Perhaps better known as recycling which means reusing items that are not fit for the purpose you had it for in the first place, therefore, is used for something more suitable. Not long ago anything that we no longer wanted was literally dumped or given away. Since the upsurge of the phrases ‘save the planet’ and ‘global warming’ we have all begun to stop and think again before dumping our unwanted stuff, good job too! I say… When I was a young child growing up during the Second World War, we literally didn’t have the money to buy stuff unless it was absolutely necessary and what clothes we no longer needed or wanted was either handed down to a younger or smaller person, or altered to fit or look different, (amazing what difference a ribbon or bit of lace will do) No, and I mean NO food was wasted – you would be sharply told off, and reminded by your mum to ‘get on and eat all your food as people were starving in some countries’ or on the odd occasion when there was anything left over it would be carefully stored and eaten as soon as possible later. When we see how much food is wasted or thrown away these days it makes your eyes water – so rather than throw food away why not try to buy less. The majority of food is so easy to store or freeze and just in case you do run out of something, there is always a convenience shop nearby. Don’t forget to remind your children and grandchildren about the need to reclaim, and recycle items no longer needed because it’s their future that’s at stake not ours.
