UK Rivers are a basis of wellbeing for people as well as animals, but too many of our rivers and streams are polluted and it is up to our water companies and government to do something about it, a recent investigation into the state of our rivers shows that many of our waterways are polluted with sewage of all kind. Unfortunately, many of our sewage treatment plants are not functioning sufficiently to protect our rivers. Polluted water is starved of oxygen, which in turn is detrimental to wildlife and birds. Freshwater is essential for the wellbeing of our planet, and all waterways need mindful management if it’s to continue serving our needs. Rising water consumption is putting pressure on our waterways and we all need to do whatever we can, no matter how little to help keep our water clean and plentiful. Here are a few tips on conserving water: 1: If you see a river or stream polluted you can always write to your MP. 2: If you notice sewage in a local river, brook or stream contact your Local Council or look up the Environment Agency hotline… 3: Never throw any waste items in rivers or streams. 4: If you are by a river and see anything untoward floating along try to fish it out, especially stuff like plastic bags, nets, fishing lines etc. 5: People who fish in lakes and streams can be particularly mindful of this as keeping the environment clean and unpolluted will entice healthier fish and more of them. 6: Never disturb nesting birds or river creatures as this all helps keep our countryside healthy, fresh, natural and vibrant. 7: Never leave children alone near the waterways, they should always be under strict parental control and… don’t forget to remind your children and grandchildren about the need to keep the waterways clean and unpolluted because it’s their future that’s at stake not ours.
