To help create a calm and peaceful atmosphere in your Zen Garden you need the help of beautiful foliage, from ground cover, plants, shrubs, bushes and trees, your garden should be enveloped in greenery. Green is a beautiful and restful colour, as well as being easy on the eye. And of course, bushes and trees are known to give shade and shelter, not only for people but for the birds and wild animals that frequent gardens. If you saved one or two of your evergreens, be sure to check them out for healthy growth, cut away any branches that are not supporting leaves, or any part of the bush or shrub that looks unhealthy, check for any disease that may be nestling in the undergrowth. Then with a couple of Japanese garden pictures in hand, look around your nearest garden centre, and try to find some foliage that you think will go with the greenery you already have. If you are starting out with a clear garden so much the better as you will be able to start from scratch. There are many plants that can be purchased that will suit a Zen Garden, among them being Japanese Maple, Acers, and Bamboo. There are books that can help you chose the best plants for your garden and many garden enthusiast will be happy to advise and assist you that work at your local garden centres. Be careful not to overbuy, as these bigger trees and plants take up a lot of room and you don’t want to crowd your space, you can always go back and buy more, also, these specialist plants will probably be quiet expensive, but they will last many years, so to buy good, attractive, healthy plants are worth what they cost… Remember to place out your new plants before planting, then once happy with their positions, you can go ahead and plant.
