Zen Garden: Water.

The element of water is essential in a Zen Garden. Many Zen gardens are set up with a stream-like water course, over which a bridge is set. It is arranged of course, according to the size of your garden, if you have a large enough garden, you can place a real bridge that people can walk over if they so wish however, most gardens will not have enough space so a small bridge, just for viewing is fine. If you do not have space for a ‘river’ type water feature there are dozens of different types of water features you can install, anything from small to large fountains, fish or flower ponds, water bowls, water pipes, garden centres are full of them. Water is essential too for wildlife, so a birdbath would suffice, if you lack room, birds love them and they will often visit, if you also put out some seeds for them. If you only have a very small water feature, remember to keep it topped up with fresh water as stagnant water has a foul odour and it can leave stains in your bowl or dish. Be careful if you have a water feature that requires an electric currant to work the pump or lights as any sort of wiring, etc. can cause a problem, any wires and plugs of course, have to be well maintained and hidden from view. Caution: Children should always be accompanied by an adult, around water features, ponds or streams.
