Buddhism began with the teachings of a prince called Siddhartha Gautama who was born and raised in India, somewhere around 500BC. For the first 30 years of his life, he only knew of joy and extreme luxury until one day when he was out riding, he saw some sights he had never witnessed before like sickness, old-age, suffering, and death, in a bid to try to understand an end to suffering he gave up his life of luxury and took on a simple life as a monk. But no matter what he did, or how he lived he just could not work out how he could end suffering, after some five or so years of trying he sat meditating under a Bodhi Tree, for around 49 days fighting off demons, until one day he realised there was nothing he could do other than to accept life as it is. Buddhists believe in reincarnation and that life goes in a permanent cycle of life and death until one becomes enlightened, and you reach Nirvana, when the cycle of suffering ceases.
