Feng Shui: Illumination

Although original Zen Gardens relied solely on natural light it is good to illuminate your Japanese garden to help create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. There are multiple ways to light up your garden, especially pin-pointing areas, near, paths, ponds, stones and any part of the garden that could be classed as a danger point for strollers. Try to hid your lights as best you can and except for the lights pointing out danger-areas, all other lights should be low level and well hidden, you can of course pin-point your compass area animal. These special lightings can help create interest and curiosity. Keep any electric cables well-hidden and away from paths and steps. Stone, metal or bamboo lanterns are rather more traditional than ordinary lighting, as they symbolise Buddha’s wisdom, most artificial lighting should be invisible during the day, and avoid overdoing lighting as the illumination should be kept subtle and peaceful.
